Starsailor - 330 Ritch

Popscene at 330 Ritch was trying to book more and more live acts to go with their club nights.  This was the first time I got to see one of these acts in the tiny space that is 330 Ritch.  Shout out to Aaron Axelsen who was instrumental in booking and promoting a ton of up and coming bands - it was always fun to get that nod of acknowledgement from him at all those different concerts around town.

Echo & the Bunnymen/Psychedelic Furs - Fillmore

Great double bill of classic 80's bands playing together in an historic venue.  I only wonder how they decided who would play first.

U2 - Oakland Arena

Totally mind blowing.  I had shown up at the arena without a ticket and managed to buy one for a reasonable price (with some help from Rome) from a scalper after the opening band (don't remember who it was) had finished.  I walked onto the floor right before U2 started their set.  It had been 9 years since I'd last seen U2 and I wondered why it had been so long.  9/11 was still fresh in everyone's mind, making for a particularly emotional and spiritual experience.

Belle & Sebastian/Jonathan Richman - Warfield

I remember counting at least seventeen members of Belle & Sebastian on stage at one time.  Also, there seemed to be a veritable blizzard of flowers thrown out to the audience from the band.

Area One - Shoreline Amphitheatre

I saw:
Moby
Paul Oakenfold
New Order with Billy Corgan
Orb
Timo Maas

Billy Corgan had been working with New Order on the "Get Ready" album, and joined the group for their North American outings on the Area One tour.  "Get Ready" has become my favorite New Order album, and you can make out a certain Billy-esque quality on the songs on which he shares songwriting credit. On stage, Billy's guitar playing offset Peter Hook's bass domination, making this New Order appearance just that much more special.

Glenn Tilbrook - Slim's

I remember Glenn coming into the crowd during the performance and playing a few songs right next to me.

Tortoise/Nobukazu Takemura - Fillmore

I remember really enjoying Tortoise.  However, I cannot for the life of me remember how I missed getting a poster for this show.

Part 2 of the day's "Gut Pageant."

Jah Wobble - Great American Music Hall

Jah Wobble was just amazing.  I was awestruck by his bass playing.

Doves - Bimbo's 365 Club

The Doves were awesome.  However, I did not manage to make it to the venue in time to catch the Strokes, who were the opening act.  I would finally get to see the Strokes for the first time when they played the Fillmore later in 2001.

Mojave 3/Sid Hillman Quartet - Slim's

I remember that, during a particularly melancholy song, a girl standing in front of me looked back at me with such a sad look on her face.

Coldplay - Fillmore

Yes, Coldplay performed at the Fillmore before they became huge.
